SCIENCE

Please visit my website for informational posts and homework.  We will cover 2 units this quarter, Space and Photosynthesis.

We worked on our electronic glossaries and essential questions for our photosynthesis unit this week.  Students should have turned in their sentence, picture and work cited columns of their glossary completed in excel.  They spent 4 days this week on that which was plenty of time to write 25 sentences and copy and paste 25 pictures in an excel document.  There are several students who did not turn this assignment in.  I will access late fees for work turned in late as many students are misusing their class time and thinking they can it done at lunch which doesn’t allow them a lot of time due to having to get lunch from the café then come back to class (in some cases) and eat.

In class today students watched 2 videos they can watch them again over the weekend if they need to take additional notes or did not view them because they were playing catchup.  The links are www.tv411.org/science (scroll down to the photosynthesis video) and www.discoveryeducation.com.  For discovery, they will need to click on the assignment 4-26 folder then the Biology video.  These videos are great resources for them to use when answering their essential questions given to them last Friday and will be due in a couple weeks or so.

Next week we will continue out study of photosynthesis and at some point we will plant flowers to watch them grow.  Happy Planting for Us!  Do you wanna help?  Let me know!

Social Studies

Focus: China

Students will be investigating China –Where it is located and how the civilization developed.  China test will be Monday, May 6th.

Tuesday: Article of the Week

Wednesday: Article of the Week

Thursday: Article of the Week

Friday:  China Test- Monday- May 6th and Article of the Week is due.

Language Arts:

Students have several opportunities to improve grades this week.  For five days, we have worked with Track 2 students on EOG practice skills.  Students have a sheet of terms to define (e.g., simile, hyperbole) that, if completed correctly, will add 5 points to the figurative language quiz reported on their interims.  Additionally, I will give them bonus homework stamps, which could make the calendar worth up to 140 points.  Finally, students who did their homework last Monday (making a study tool for the morphemes quiz) were able to use the tools they made for the quiz.  (This might encourage those who chose not to do this assignment to complete this Monday’s homework).  Last, but not least, we will review the released EOG (students were given this website approximately 2 weeks ago) using IPads in the classroom and in the computer lab on Thursday and Friday. Packets of review materials will be given to students this week for practice.

Students have told me that they are getting “burned out”.  We will begin the novel, Freak the Mighty, officially May 1st, but the novel will be distributed on April 29th.

Homework:

Monday:              Make a study tool for the last morphemes quiz and complete definitions page

Tuesday:              anticipation guide – novel unit

Wednesday:        movie permission form – read to contract

Thursday:             Study for morphemes quiz

Friday:                no HW

Last week’s morphemes test was postponed to Tuesday, April 16th for several reasons:  our media center date was changed to Friday from Monday, April 15th and I thought we would have a less stressful time in the media center (this is our last circulation of this year!), and the social studies benchmark is April 15th  (I don’t like the competition!).  This week we will be teaming with track 2 students for EOG practice.  Last week students were given a website for released common core assessments to practice.  On May 8th we will be visiting that website with I-Pads to practice with the released tests.  I have had a number of inquiries as to when we will begin reading, Freak the Mighty.  I will be distributing reading calendars and novels on May 1st and we have scheduled the movie to be shown after testing in late May.  This helps students have a novel during testing and a way to let loose after testing (watching the movie).  The film is rated PG-13, and permission slips will be coming home on May 1st for you to sign.

Please visit my website for informational posts and homework.  We will cover 2 units this quarter, Space and Photosynthesis.

The Space Vocabulary was uploaded to the website on March 10 for students to get a head start.  They will be allowed 2 class periods to work on it at school and then will need to finish it on their own time.  It is due on or before April 12.  I will not accept any after that date and I will not allowed them to print the list from school to cut and glue because that is not a requirement for the project.

Next week we will study the moon and its phases as well as complete some reading selections regarding space.

Students visited the media center on March 22nd to renew and return books and to check out new books.  Reading contracts this quarter are due on May 10th.  We will also be engaged in another novel unit this quarter.  This novel is Freak the Mighty,

Please encourage your child to be reviewing and studying figurative language terms (e.g., simile, metaphor, personification, alliteration, hyperbole, onomatopoeia, symbolism, internal and end rhyme, imagery).  We worked on those terms 2nd and 3rd quarter, and only a few new terms were added in 6th grade.  It is important the students know the definitions and can recognize these terms in literature for 7th grade.  On the weekly essentials (grade on span for no credit), this was an area of weakness, and on a recent assignment for Mrs. Hall, the question about figurative language was the one most frequently missed.

Please also encourage your child to review grammar, specifically parts of speech.  On the same essentials practice, students also failed to consistently distinguish between proper and common and abstract and concrete nouns.  Study guides may and should be used when completing these practice materials.

   Reminders:

Mrs. Latham’s Computer Class:

Due to our delay, we did not have my class today.  Several students needed to turn in late work or finish up their keyboarding lessons.  To be fair, I printed a report for any student that was missing an assignment and delivered it to him/her.  These assignments need to be completed over the weekend and must be in to me on Monday so I can adjust grades before my 3rd Quarter grades are submitted.  If students did not receive a printout from me, they are not missing anything.  Parents can also go in and check SPAN.  This was updated this morning.  It usually takes 24 hours before students/parents see the changes.  Students can access Blackboard and EduType at home to complete any missing assignments or lessons.

Students, don’t forget projects are due Wednesday, Feb. 27!  Have a good weekend.

  • Track-Out Day is Friday March 1st.  Report Cards will come home with the students.
  • March Madness is March 1st  This year we are having a “glowout“. Shirts can be purchased from Ms. Gimbar at the end of the 8th grade hall for $10. Part of the proceeds go to a Durant Family in need, and part go to the Jimmy V. Foundation.
  • Athletic booster club is taking donations to put together baskets which will be raffled at March Madness. They ask to have all items by February 22nd.  If you don’t have time to shop or are just concerned about duplication and would like to make a cash donation, please put it in an envelope marked March Madness Donation. Send all items/donations in to your child’s homeroom teacher. Please direct questions to Ms. King at king.trish@gmail.com.

SCIENCE

Please visit my website for informational posts and homework.  We are finished with The Land Beneath Our Feet Unit.

Due to the 3 hour delay and shorten class periods, everyone didn’t not get the chance to present Part II of their Pet Rock Project.  I told the students whether they presented or not if they didn’t have a hard copy of their story to physically hand me along with their hand drawn rock cycle diagram that they needed to email me the hardcopy or  powerpoint, or their goanimate, voki, or xtranormal video TODAY!  I will not be checking my email after today until Monday and grades are due at noon on Monday so there will be no time for me to grade them on Monday as we have a test that day.  Also I have uploaded several narrated powerpoints to my website for the students to use in preparation for the test.  Please have your child go to the website and view the post for February 20, 2013.

4th quarter will consist of two units, Space and Ecology (photosynthesis).  It will be fast paced and full.  More to come and I will keep you posted!

On Tuesday, February 26th students will take the 3rd quarter language arts benchmark, in preparation for the end-of-year, as yet to be named assessment.  Our team did well on the benchmark from 2nd quarter – scoring, on average, 5 percentage points higher than the average for the county.  Students have an analysis of their 2nd quarter benchmark scores that they can share with you.

I will assign no homework this week.
