6th Grade Science Meeting on 02/07/2013

Participants: Mr. B and Mrs. Hall

Quarter SMART Goal: Same

Minutes: Mr. B shared with me information regarding a Common Core professional development that we are required to do and receive a certificate of completion for. Mrs. Hall shared with Mr. B a Pet Rock Project. Mr. B shared with Mrs. Hall a soil lab and purchased supplies needed for the upcoming soil unit. We discussed pacing compared to CMAPP and discussed upcoming concepts and lessons. We shared and talked about flipping the classroom and Mrs. Hall showed an example of a powerpoint and shared worksheets.

Quarter SMART Goal: During the 2012-2013 school year Science classrooms will demonstrate an effective learning environment through students working collaboratively 60-70% of the time
with explicit or modeled instruction, and using higher levels of cognitive complexity as measured by the DRMS Walk Through Form

Minutes: Received new info for topics we have already taught this year. We can begin looking at these to improve instruction for next year or even review for later in the year.

Talked about upcomind DBQ topics. David will possibly do one on conflict minerals. Chrissy is completing one on Haiti earthquake vs. Pompeii volcano in December.

We need to create CFAs for this unit. Possible exit tickets or small assessments.

Meet next week to create exit ticket ideas.

Quarter SMART Goal: Same

Minutes: Mr. Brancaccio shared a lesson that meet the new common core reading/writing skills for Light Energy. He also shared a great activity on to make a foldable book with Heat Transfer. Mrs. Hall talked about her pacing with the new common core for science. She shared some exciting activities and labs that she would like to complete with her classes before they track out on November 30.
Mr. Brancaccio talked about great resources in the Media Center that can be used to enhance science lessons and labs.

Quarter SMART Goal: Same

Minutes: Today we discussed how to enhance the virtual sound lab. Mr. B shared some ideas on having the students identify and document the decibel and hertz of a sound. We both talked about different ways to enhance the lab. Mrs. Hall shared her sight/light/sound assessment with the PLT. We also discussed some ideas and strategies on teaching the next chapter with heat transfer. Mr. B suggested an exciting lab that uses aluminum foil, and copper pennies, and styrofoam that help helps engage students with conductors and insulators.
