Quarter SMART Goal: 85% of students will earn a 70% or higher on quarterly benchmarks during the 2012-2013 school year.
Minutes: 1. Discussed Personal Narrative:
Laura and Trish discussed how to coordinate that writing with their students. Laura is going to begin the kids with the Narrative Essay, go through the pre-writing and student revision. Laura is doing a Taxedo project to bring in technology with the writing and to make it more interesting for the kids. We discussed using the SAS Curriculum program to have their papers edited, to see how this program works. Laura shared some resources with us that she has found to support writing essays. Laura will make copies for us to have of these resources. Laura had mentioned for the rubric having a “rolling grade.” We hand out a rubric at the beginning and grade the process as we go. We decided to use the C-MAPP Rubric to give Teacher Feedback before the final copy. We decided to have the students do a reflection before the students get their grade, then what is their reaction to the grade – is it what they expected, and moving forward what would they do differently, set goals.
2. Ordeal by Cheque:
Trish introduced this as a possible project with the kids. (RL8.1, RL8.2, RL8.3) They have to do an inference project. They will also watch a YouTube video on the project and the kids will also have to present a group presentation for their interpretation of the story with technology as a piece of the presentation.
3. Reader’s Response:
We each shared how we are doing the Reader’s Response piece. Laura is doing a 3-4 week book report/project/response. Becky is doing a weekly Reader’s Response Entry in their journals. Kim does a bi-weekly one similar to Becky’s. Trish is doing a bi-weekly response as well.
3. C-MAPP:
Laura shared Breaking News English which is a free resource for good, interesting non-fiction articles. Trish mentioned a subscription service and Laura brought Channel One/Flocabulary.
Day: 21-25
-Start with realistic fiction poetry : Jacqueline Woodson’s poems in the Literature Book
-Literature: “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” (point of view and humor)
-Becky will pick up from here with the Narrative Essay, Kim will prepare for the unit test
4. Unit Test (Common Formative Assessment):
See next week’s agenda.
5. Grammar:
We have decided to go back to bare bones and really focus on skills and knowledge rather than just trying to teach grammar through the literature.
