6th Grade Social Studies Meeting on 07/26/2012

Participants: Participants: Susan Parker, Kay Holland, Amanda Herman, and Caroline Miles

Quarter SMART Goal: Quarter SMART Goal: During the 2012-2013 school year Social Studies classrooms will demonstrate an effective learning environment through students working collaboratively 60-70% of the time
with explicit or modeled instruction, and using higher levels of cognitive complexity as measured by the DRMS Walk Through Form.

Literacy Goal
During the 2012-2013 school year at DRMS, 6th Grade Social Studies teachers will incorporate 1-2 literacy strategies per unit.

A. Begin and end on time.
B. Place cell phones on vibrate.
C. Stay focused.
D. Be an active participant.

1. Discussed how to meet students needs- Mrs. Parker suggested that students come back at lunch. A department would be on lunch duty- Ex SS and then the other teachers could bring back the students to help them. You would have lunch duty 1 day a week and help students 1-3 days a week. This is just a discuss and she is looking for feed back.

2. Discussed Early Release -DBQ Project- Caroline brought up the question of doing Sparta and Athens.

3. Also discussed Curriculum issues- Mrs. Parker encouraged us to become familiar with the material this year and do the best we could. Caroline brought up that students had a difficult time with the test- The Five Themes part-analyzing the article and picking out each theme. Track 3 is doing retests- Must do work to provide evidence that they are prepared for the retest.

4. Track In and Out Procedure- Make sure that the room has the necessary materials when the teacher tracks in and that is clean. 6th grade will track out on the Thursday before at 1:40 p.m.
