DRMS MEDIA CENTER POLICIES
Checkout Policies:
Students may check out books, magazines, books on tape* and playaways* from DRMS media center. Also with a note from a teacher about the student's need for the equipment and a signed (by a parent or guardian) Student Responsibility Toward Materials form, students may check out boom boxes, digital cameras, and video cameras for one class period.
*Signed Student Responsibility Toward Materials form required for checkout of these items.
Circulation:
- Books are circulated for three-week periods so that students will be able to have books during track-out. It is the student's responsibility to check-out/renew books and other materials before they track-out and return/renew books as soon as they track back in to avoid overdue fines.
- Reference books are circulated for one night only and contingent on student's record.
- Magazines are circulated for one night only.
- Playaways are circulated for 10 days.
- Books on Tape are circulated for seven days.
- Over track-out, a student may visit the library to check out a book, but he or she is considered a visitor and must have a pass from the office before coming to the media center.
- Students may renew books, but they get only one 3-week renewal per book.
Overdue Fines:
Overdue fines are charged at the rate of $.05 (five cents) per day for a book or magazine and $.25 (twenty-five cents) per day for a playaway, book on tape, or reference book. When a student's overdue fines exceed $3.00 (three dollars), a student has two overdue books, OR a student has one book over thirty (30) days overdue, borrowing privileges are suspended. Students receive overdue notices once a month and are expected to settle their library accounts.
Lost Book Refund Policy: Students who pay for a lost book will be refunded if that book is found and returned within the CURRENT school year.
The use of the media center is a privilege. Students who do not return their materials on time prohibit others from checking them out.
Internet and Email Acceptable Use Policy:
Students may use computers in the media center ONLY for school-related work.
All students registered in the Wake County Public School System will automatically be given access to the Internet. Parents have the option of denying a child's access to the Internet. To exercise this option, a parent should complete and return the Parental Request to Deny Access form. Unless otherwise stated, the parent acknowledges that parent and child have read, understand and agree to the acceptable use of these services as stated in the Wake County Public School System's Student Internet Access and Electronic Mail Policy (6446). The policy can be found in the Parents & Students Handbook.
Any violation of the Wake County Public School System/Durant Road Middle School Acceptable Use Policy will result in disciplinary action.
DRMS Media Center Policies For Equipment:
- Before a student may check out any equipment from the media center, they must first provide to the media staff two items: (1) a signed Student Responsibility Toward Materials form and (2) a note from the teacher about the student's need for the equipment (i.e. nature of the project, etc.). A teacher note must be sent each time the student comes to the media center to check out a piece of equipment.
- Video cameras and digital cameras must be checked out at the beginning of the period they are needed and returned at the end of that period. If equipment is not returned on time, the student's equipment borrowing privileges will be suspended for the remainder of the school year.
- Students may NOT take home video cameras or digital cameras overnight. If a home video camera or a digital camera is damaged, stolen, or lost while it is checked out to a student, then that student is financially responsible for replacing the lost equipment. If he or she does not replace the equipment, then his or her media center checkout privileges will be revoked indefinitely.
The Check-out Process at DRMS Media Center:
- For books and magazines, the student brings the item to the circulation desk and gives his/her name to the media staff member on duty. The staff member finds the student's name in the system and checks out the book to the student.
- The student stamps the due date a slip in the back of the book. Magazines are to be returned in the following morning, and the media staff member writes the due date on CD-Roms and audiotapes.
- Students are not issued picture I.D. cards at DRMS. Because we foster an environment of trustworthiness at our school, the checkout procedures are reliable and efficient.
- The staff takes great pride in our media center, and we are dedicated to providing impeccable and accurate service to our patrons.
Morning Expectations in the Media Center
